Manchester’s Oldest Addiction Charity Seeks Trustees

ADS (Addiction Dependency Solutions) will be 50 next year and seeks new trustees to help with our mission supporting individuals and their families dealing with addiction.

ADS believes in a people not substance focused approach and has a successful track record helping individuals and their families develop strategies for coping with the challenges of addiction in Greater Manchester.

We are seeking individuals with particular skills and experience in financial management, marketing and counselling or other relevant experience. As an organisation committed to inclusion we are particularly looking to recruit volunteer trustees who come from a wide variety of social, economic, ethnic, sexual orientation and gender backgrounds.

You can find out a little more about the role below, and our simple application form is at the bottom of this page.

What is ADS? ADS is the oldest surviving alcohol and drug addiction charity in Greater Manchester. Originally set up in 1973 by a member of the public concerned for the welfare of a close family member who was drinking too much alcohol, we are proud of our heritage, we are proud of our achievements over the last 48 years and we are proud of our plans to return to the heart of ADS and to the heart of our communities in 2022.

What does ADS do? We help people with addiction problems get their lives back on track with grass-roots peer-focussed support coming directly to you in the heart of your community. We believe in a person-focussed, not substance-focussed, approach.

Our vision:

Our vision is to return ADS to what it does best. Connecting directly with people who need help because they are struggling with alcohol or drug use, to connect with family members of those experiencing difficulties and to provide practical and emotional support that will enable them to overcome those challenges and thrive.

Our mission

  • To connect directly with people struggling with alcohol and/or drug use.
  • To provide practical and emotional support to people affected by alcohol and drug use, including family members.
  • To provide spaces in local communities where people can meet and learn new ways of coping with challenges.

Our Values: Honesty, Compassion, Commitment, Integrity, Collaboration, Anti-discrimination

Where is ADS based? We are based in Greater Manchester and we work in all 10 boroughs.

What is a trustee and what skills are you looking for? The role of a trustee is primarily governance. The trustees of ADS have ultimate legal responsibility for the charity and so must support and scrutinise the operational team to ensure ADS continues to deliver its mission and lives by its values.  ADS prides itself in its person-focussed and respectful attitude to helping people with substance misuse issues, and we are looking for volunteer Trustees who embody our values.

We are particularly looking for people with a background/interest in helping people with addiction who have the following skills and backgrounds:

  • Financial Management
  • Marketing
  • Counselling

How much time will I need to give? There are generally four meetings of the Board of Trustees annually, of two hours in length, plus ad-hoc operational meetings as and when required.

Will you offer me any training and do you pay expenses? Yes, we will offer training around how to effectively govern a charity and we pay travel expenses.

Where are your meetings held? Our meetings are held in Manchester city centre when possible, but can be moved to electronic if necessary.

How do I apply? Please fill out our electronic application form here:

If you would like an informal chat about the role first, please email us at [email protected]

What are you expecting from my application? We want to see your passion for our cause and also how you believe your skills could help us.

Is there a closing date? Yes, 28th February 2022 at 17:00.

We look forward to hearing from you!
